FRENECTOMY, RENECTOMY, and FRENOTOMY

Frenectomy

A frenum is a fold of mucous membrane that attaches lips and cheeks to the gums, and Alveolar mucosa (soft tissue overlying the Alveolar bone). The Frenal attachment provides support to upper lips and any defect in the positioning and size of the Frenum will cause problems aesthetically and functionally.

Frenectomy is a minor procedure where the Frenum is removed via oral surgery to enhance the aesthetic and functional aspects of the face.

Problems with high frenal attachment

It is related to the hygiene of the oral cavity.
High Frenal attachment can retract the gums and cause injury.
Restriction of lip movement.
Development of Diastema (space between two anterior teeth).

Frenotomy—Solution of Tongue-tie

Tongue-tie (Ankyloglossia) is very common in infants, affecting around 4-10% of all babies. It’s a state where a limited tongue movement can only be done due to problems with lingual Frenum.

It can cause problems such as the incomplete and improper movement of the tongue, which is a basic requirement for swallowing food, speaking, and hygiene.

When should you consult a dentist?

If the mother is feeling difficulty in breastfeeding.
The baby is not able to eat properly and is always hungry.
If he is crying or making a clicking sound during feeding.
When you notice that the infant can’t move his tongue properly.

Procedure

Frenotomy is a painless procedure where the area to be operated is first anesthetized and then Frenum is clipped and incised. Anesthesia isn’t needed to numb the Frenum every time, as it contains fewer nerves and blood vessels. Laser procedures can also be used for frenotomy.
